Core PCE at 8:30 AM decides the Fed's next move. Long-end yields sit at fresh 20-year highs. Micron reports tonight.
Where Futures Sit
Modest bounce attempt after Tuesday's fade. S&P 500 futures sit near 7,735, roughly flat. Dow futures up around 30 points. Nasdaq futures dipping into the red as long-end yields keep pressuring high-multiple names.
Tuesday closed lower across the board... Dow off 0.26 percent, S&P down 0.17 percent, Nasdaq off 0.09 percent. AI-linked names bucked the trend, again.
...Elon Musk quietly filed a patent to protect his new invention, a new form of AI former tech executive Jeff Brown calls "M.A.G.I."
Macro Pulse
The whole session hangs on one print. Core PCE at 8:30 AM ET. Consensus 3.3 percent year over year, with forecasts leaning toward 3.4 percent. This is the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, not CPI.
Q2 GDP third estimate lands at the same time. Together they set the tone for whether Warsh keeps hinting at hikes or steps back.
Fed officials are openly split. Williams says "no urgency" after the September hike. Barr wants more tightening. Goolsbee called sticky inflation "playing with fire."
Oil is drifting lower on the fresh Strategic Petroleum Reserve release. Brent near $101. The Iran war is in month seven. Weekly EIA oil inventory data at 10:30 AM ET.
Tickers To Watch
MU: Micron after the close. The single most important AI-memory read-through of the quarter.
CAG: ConAgra before the bell. Consumer staples pricing-power check.
CALM, FDS, JBL: Also reporting pre-market. Food inflation, software subscriptions, contract manufacturing reads.
XLU, VNQ: Utilities and REITs both pounded by long-end yields. Watch for capitulation.
TLT: The long bond ETF is at fresh lows. Every retirement portfolio carrying duration is bleeding paper losses this morning.
Stock Highlight: Verizon (VZ)
The 6.5 percent dividend yielder Wall Street has left for dead.
Verizon closed Tuesday at $37, down 12 percent year-to-date. Market's excuse: with the 30-year Treasury paying nearly 5 percent, why bother with a wireless company?
That excuse misses the setup. Verizon raised its dividend for the 19th straight year in September. Free cash flow covers the payout more than 1.5 times over. Debt is finally coming down after the Frontier acquisition closed.
Real-world context: 500 shares at today's price pays you roughly $1,355 in cash dividends every year, whether the stock moves or not. About a monthly grocery bill, paid by a company whose network is in your pocket right now.
Caveat: 5G capex is winding down, but AI edge infrastructure is winding up. VZ is caught in between. Get-paid-to-wait, not get-rich-quick.
At 6.5 percent, income-focused readers should at least know it exists.
Bottom Line
Record concentration in seven AI names. 30-year yield at multi-decade highs. Oil above $100 in month seven of a war. And a PCE print in ninety minutes that will move everything.
For investors every basis point higher on long yields is a paper loss in your fixed-income sleeve today.
