The Most Hyped AI Stock You’ve Never Heard Of. What's Actually Under the Hood.

- IREN (NASDAQ: IREN) has become one of the most talked-about names in the AI trade. It started life as a Bitcoin miner and is remaking itself into an AI cloud provider, renting out GPU computing power from data centers it runs on renewable energy. The stock is up roughly 219% over the past year.
- The bull case is real and it is signed. IREN raised its year-end run-rate revenue target to more than $4 billion, said about 85% of it is under contract, and has locked multi-year deals with a roster that includes Microsoft, Nvidia, Perplexity, Figure AI and others.
- The bear case is also real. The company loses money, missed its last earnings badly, and trades near 120 times earnings on a stock that swings 15% to 20% on sector mood alone. This is a high-risk name, and the point of this note is to show you both sides before the hype makes the decision for you.
Every few months a stock arrives that seems to be everywhere at once. Right now that stock is IREN (NASDAQ: IREN). It has surged and cratered repeatedly through the summer, analysts are throwing out price targets from $24 to $136 on the same company, and the message boards treat it as either the next great AI fortune or an obvious trap. Both camps are loud.
Neither is especially interested in being fair. So rather than tell you what to think, this note walks through what IREN actually is, what is genuinely working, and what could go wrong, and lets you weigh it yourself.
Yahoo Finance says it could unlock $400 trillion. Jeff Brown was consulted by Congressional offices in Washington, D.C. to advise on it.
He says the real number is even bigger — as much as $2.6 quadrillion could pour onto a new type of investment exchange in the days ahead…
What the Company Actually Does
Start with the plainest possible description. A data center is a warehouse full of computers that other companies rent instead of buying. IREN builds and runs those warehouses, powers them with renewable energy, and fills them with the graphics chips that artificial-intelligence models need to train and run.
When an AI startup wants computing power but does not want to spend two years and a billion dollars building its own facility, it rents from a provider like IREN. The industry nickname for this new breed of specialist landlord is a “neocloud.”
Here is the part that surprises people. IREN did not begin as an AI company at all. It began as a Bitcoin miner, running rooms full of machines solving cryptographic puzzles for coin rewards. That turns out to be unusually good preparation for the AI landlord business, because the two jobs need the same three things: cheap electricity, a lot of it, and the physical real estate to house the machines.
IREN already had power contracts, land, and the operational skill of running enormous energy-hungry computing sites. It is now redirecting all of it from mining coins to renting AI compute. The Bitcoin business still runs in the background and still generates cash while the transformation plays out.
Why the Bulls Are Excited
The enthusiasm is not built on a story alone. It is built on signed contracts, which is what makes IREN more interesting than a typical hype stock. In July the company raised its target for year-end annualized run-rate revenue, the pace at which its business is on track to earn, from $3.7 billion to more than $4 billion, and said roughly 85% of that figure is already committed under contract rather than hoped for.
Behind that number sits a customer list most young companies would envy: multi-year agreements worth billions with a group that reportedly includes Microsoft, Nvidia, Perplexity, Figure AI, Together AI and Fireworks AI. Nvidia, the company whose chips the whole AI boom runs on, has both signed an infrastructure deal with IREN and taken an interest in the neocloud group broadly.
The demand backdrop is the second leg. The world does not have enough AI computing capacity, and building more is limited by how fast you can secure power and pour concrete, not by how fast you can write software.
A company that already controls power and sites has a genuine head start. That is why analysts who like the stock use words like “top AI pick” and set targets more than double the current price.
Why the Bears Are Not Buying It
Now the other side, in full, because this is where the hype tends to go quiet. IREN does not make money. Its most recent quarter produced a loss of $0.74 per share against expectations of a $0.22 loss, a miss of more than 200%, on revenue that came in at roughly $145 million versus the $220 million analysts expected. That is not a small stumble.
Both the profit and the sales badly undershot. And it is not a one-time event: across the last 21 quarterly reports, IREN has beaten expectations 3 times and missed 12. The habit is to disappoint on the print even when the long-term story is intact.
Then there is the price. At around $41 the stock carries a market value near $18 billion and trades at roughly 120 times earnings, an extraordinary multiple for a company still running losses.
It is priced for the future to arrive exactly on schedule. And it is violently volatile: over the past year it has traded between roughly $15 and $77, it fell more than 50% from its high during one AI-spending scare this summer, then rallied 21% in a single session on the revenue-target news. The options market routinely expects double-digit moves. A stock that can rise or fall 20% on sentiment is not an investment you can hold casually.
One more risk deserves naming, because it hides inside the good news. The contracted revenue that thrills the bulls also concentrates the company’s fate in a handful of very large customers. If IREN commits most of its remaining capacity to one or two buyers, those buyers gain enormous leverage over pricing and renewal terms.
Signed contracts are a strength today. Depending on a few counterparties is a vulnerability tomorrow.
Same underlying company. 55X more income. On $10,000: Regular Apple: $49 per year Upgraded version: $2,736 per year
That's $228 every single month instead of $4.
Tesla? Even better. Zero dividends normally.
Over 50% annually with this upgrade. Amazon? Zero dividends.
Now potentially $306 monthly from $10,000.
The Scorecard

Working Against ItPersistent losses, a long record of missing earnings estimates, a triple-digit earnings multiple, extreme share-price volatility, exposure to sudden shifts in AI-spending sentiment, and customer concentration inside the very contracts that look so attractive.

The Bottom Line
IREN is neither the guaranteed fortune the bulls describe nor the empty hype the skeptics dismiss. It is a genuine, fast-moving bet that the AI computing shortage lasts long enough for a former Bitcoin miner to convert its power and land into a profitable cloud business before the losses or the sentiment turn against it.
The signed contracts make that bet more grounded than most in this corner of the market. The losses, the missed quarters, and the 120-times multiple make it a bet all the same, and one sized for a small, speculative slice of a portfolio rather than a core holding.
If you own it or are tempted to, the honest framing is this: you are being paid to take real risk, not handed a sure thing. The next earnings report, expected in late August, is the next real test of whether the contracts are turning into cash.
It's at the center of a paradigm shift that Nobel laureate Demis Hassabis says could be "nothing less than the dawning of a new age for humanity."
