The Nasdaq closed at a record yesterday. Four names did most of the lifting. This morning the record chasers sit flat and small caps lead.
Where Futures Sit
S&P 500 futures up 0.03 percent. Nasdaq 100 futures down 0.03 percent.
Dow futures up 0.16 percent. Russell 2000 futures up 0.72 percent, the widest gap on the board.
Monday was a melt-up. The Nasdaq Composite closed at a record 27,122.09, up 2.26 percent. The S&P 500 closed at 7,764.70, up 1.49 percent, still 0.4 percent under its own high.
Macro Pulse
Three Fed speakers today. Williams at 10:05 AM ET, Jefferson at 10:20 AM ET, Barkin at 1:00 PM ET. No scheduled data.
They speak into one question. The Fed raised its target range to 3.75 to 4.00 percent on September 16, a 12 to 0 vote and the first increase since 2023. Chairman Warsh said inflation is too high and has been for too long.
Futures put the odds of another quarter point in October near 49 percent. Ten-year Treasury at 4.97 percent.
Brent crude back above $101 after Treasury moved to shut Iranian airlines out of global aviation by Wednesday. President Xi arrives in the United States tomorrow through Friday.
What I'm about to tell you right now is probably going to make me public enemy #1 on Wall Street.
Tickers To Watch
META: Up 11.4 percent Monday. Its autonomous agent Muse has topped the free iPhone app chart for three straight days.
AMD: Up 10 percent, closing above a $1 trillion market value for the first time.
ARM: Up 17.2 percent, the largest move of the group. INTC added 12.1 percent on the same bet.
AZO: Reports before the bell. The read on households repairing the car instead of replacing it.
KBH: Reports after the close. The freshest read on buyer traffic.
LEN: Up 1.31 percent premarket at $79.10. See below.
Stock Highlight: Lennar (LEN)
While the tape chased chips, Berkshire Hathaway bought $212.4 million of Lennar across three trading days this month. That lifts the position to roughly $1.2 billion in the second largest homebuilder in the country.
It bought into bad news. Lennar's third quarter profit fell to $284 million from $591 million a year ago. New orders dropped 9 percent. Gross margin slipped to 15.8 percent from 17.5 percent, because the company is buying down mortgage rates to move inventory.
A homebuilder turns land into houses on a three to five year clock, and mortgage rates decide how fast the last step happens.
Think of a farmer with the barn full at harvest and a bad price at the elevator. The crop does not spoil. He waits, and he buys the neighbor's acres while nobody else has cash.
That is the bull case. The stock sits at $78.08, down 22.8 percent this year, inside a dollar or two of its 52 week low of $75.70, at 14.8 times earnings with a 2.56 percent dividend.
The bear case is the calendar. The Fed just raised rates and may raise again in October. Every month of that is another month of margin bought away at the closing table. Berkshire can wait five years for the turn. A reader drawing income in three cannot.
Bottom Line
A record built on four stocks is still a record, and it is still built on four stocks.
Meta, Arm, Intel and AMD are pricing in a spending cycle that has been live for three days on an app store chart. That can hold. It has held before. It also means your index fund is now carrying more of one theme than it was in January, without you placing a single trade.
The useful move today is not picking a side on chips. It is pulling up your top ten holdings and counting how many depend on the same story. Then look at where Berkshire is buying, in the part of the market the Fed is actively squeezing, and ask which half of your money is doing which job.
