Pre-Market Brief | Tuesday, September 15, 2026
Research Desk · September 15, 2026
Three of the most powerful people in AI asked the industry to slow down. Chip stocks had their worst day since July. The companies that write the checks went up.
Where Futures Sit
S&P 500 futures down 0.5 percent. Nasdaq 100 futures down 0.6 percent. Dow futures down 0.7 percent.
Monday the S&P 500 slipped 0.5 percent to 7,619.95. The real damage was in chips: the Philadelphia chip index fell 5.9 percent.
Do not buy any AI stocks until you see my urgent message I just recorded.
Macro Pulse
The Fed opens its two-day meeting this morning. Futures put roughly 92 percent odds on a quarter-point hike tomorrow at 2 PM ET, which would be the first increase since July 2023.
The 10-year Treasury sits at 5.02 percent, its highest since 2007. WTI crude trades near $104 after attacks knocked Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline offline.
August retail sales land tomorrow at 8:30 AM ET, five and a half hours before the decision.
Tickers To Watch
NVDA: Fell 3.4 percent Monday. The market is pricing a slower buildout, not cancelled orders.
MU: Lost more than 5 percent. Memory is the most cyclical link in the AI chain.
CRWD: Jumped about 15 percent. If AI gets harder to control, somebody gets paid to guard it.
PANW: Up nearly 14 percent on the same logic.
XOM: Crude above $100 makes the biggest US oil major the tape's counterweight to tech.
Stock Highlight: Microsoft (MSFT)
Satya Nadella publicly backed the call to keep AI under human control. His stock rose 1.6 percent on a day the chip index lost nearly 6.
Here is why. Microsoft spent more than $115 billion on capital projects last fiscal year, most of it on AI infrastructure. Every one of those dollars was revenue for a chipmaker.
Think of a homeowner halfway through a renovation who decides to live in the finished rooms for a year. The contractor loses the work. The homeowner keeps the cash.
The bear case is real. Azure growth depends on AI demand staying hot, and a prudent-sounding slowdown can show up as softer bookings. The yield is under 1 percent, so this is a quality hold, not an income play.
Bottom Line
Monday split the AI trade in two. The companies selling shovels got punished. The companies that own the mines got a pass.
Nobody cancelled an order yesterday. This was a repricing of the future, and those reverse fast.
If you are drawing income within five years, check how much of your equity sleeve sits in chips alone. With a 5 percent Treasury on the table and a hike priced for tomorrow, you are being paid to keep some powder dry.
